online dating.
thoughts on it? here’s mine, but let’s have a little discussion and bring some life back into this site yeah?
for the longest time i was absolutely convinced that the only people who used online dating websites - match, eharmony, etc. - were over 40s in search of old high school sweethearts, rich divorcées, casual sex..you get the picture. never would i imagine that any of my friends have used it. i mean, c’mon.. we’re YOUNG! we go out! we go to school! we meet new people, we’re attractive damnit! once i found out that one of my exboyfriends had an account on a website of that nature so out of curiousity i checked it out and all i could do was laugh for ten minutes straight. yes, i realize that makes me an awful person - c’est la vie. this being said, he broke up with me - so i guess we’re even.
anyway - the other week when i was home i caught brunch with a friend. she seemed happier than ever and less than ten minutes into the conversation she was gushing and glowing talking about her new boyfriend. he’s smart (like, FBI science smart), cooks amazingly, treats her like a princess, and is really laid back/lovely/mature. i was starting to believe that men like him simply didn’t exist anymore. can you remember the last time you met one of those? i can’t. it’s probably because they’re all hiding in secret headquarters like he was. anyway..after prying a bit she finally admitted that she met him on a dating website. at first i giggled, thinking of how bizarre it was that this strong, beautiful, and generally amazing friend of mine went to that extreme to aid the process of finding someone.. but then she went on to tell me how it’s the “done thing” in the city she lives and how most people our age use it, yada yada yada. it’s not so taboo anymore. she used okcupid.
out of curiousity i took a peek around the website and found it a lot less creepy than i was expecting it to be. then i found out that a member (christian rudder) of one of my favourite bands, Bishop Allen - is a part of the team who founded it! still not convinced that it’d be my cup of tea, but thought it was worth a mention.
love,
elle
